Downtown, with a mountain option
A day in Anchorage — 6 stops, about 2.28 km on foot, 33 minutes walking.
A compact downtown day that starts with rail history, leaves room for a Flattop hike if you want one, then settles into gardens, coffee, and the Anchorage Museum. About 1.6 km of walking in total, so it suits anyone who prefers short hops between indoor and outdoor stops.
The route, in order
Alaska Railroad No 1
A quick, fixed starting point: a single historic locomotive that sets up the railroad's role in the city before anything else opens.
9 min walk — Head south
Flattop Mountain Shuttle
The shuttle pickup is the day's fork in the road — commit to the Flattop climb here, or note it for another morning and carry on downtown.
6 min walk — Head west on W 4th Ave toward D St
Town Square Park
Opens 06:00
Back in the centre, the square is the easiest place to reset, with landscaped beds and whatever community event happens to be set up.
2 min walk — Head west
The Kobuk
A short walk off the square for coffee or tea in a landmark building, with gifts and specialty goods if you want to browse while you drink.
6 min walk — Head east on W 5th Ave toward E St
Anchorage Museum
The main indoor block of the day, close enough to walk from the cafe: Alaska art, history, science, Native cultures, and a planetarium.
10 min walk — Head south
Frontierland Park
A quieter neighbourhood green space to end on — open lawn and recreation areas rather than another sight to work through.
