Bridge to the Lower East Side

A day in New York City — 4 stops, about 5.19 km on foot, 72 minutes walking.

A morning bridge crossing, then a walk north into the Lower East Side for immigration history and lunch, ending at Union Square. About 3.5 km of walking, mostly flat, and it suits anyone who wants the city's older layers alongside the skyline view.

The route, in order

  1. Brooklyn Bridge

Start on the bridge walkway early, before the middle of the day when the pedestrian path fills up.

  2. 37 min walk — Head northwest on Brooklyn Bridge Promenade

    Tenement Museum

    Opens 10:00

From the Manhattan end it's a short walk northeast into the Lower East Side, timed for the museum's 10:00 opening.

  3. 7 min walk — Head southeast on Delancey St toward Orchard St

    Katz's Delicatessen

    Opens 08:00

Lunch a few blocks from the museum, and the tenement stories make more sense of a deli that has been here since 1888.

  4. 28 min walk — Head north on Ludlow St toward E Houston St

    Union Square Park

    Opens 06:00

A straight walk north up to the park, which works as a slower end to the day: benches, statues, and the market crowd.
