Maui

Your getaway to Maui

Start with the one you have to see: sunrise from Haleakala's summit, cold and windblown and completely worth the early alarm. Spend a morning snorkeling at Kaanapali's Black Rock, where turtles cruise past just offshore of the beach. Wander Paia town in the afternoon, browsing surf shops and picking up fish tacos at a counter that's always busy for a reason. Drive a stretch of the Hana Highway for waterfalls and roadside banana bread, turning back whenever you feel like it. One evening, do the classic luau for the kalua pig, the hula, and the sunset over the water. Another evening, keep it loose: shave ice and a stroll along the Kihei beach path as the sky goes orange. Fit in an upcountry detour to Kula for farm views and the island's best cup of coffee with a view of both shores. Leave one full day unplanned for a beach you picked by pulling over somewhere pretty. A little famous, a little local, a lot of ocean. That's Maui in the right proportions, and it never misses.
