Will I see Rome or just lines?
Both. Colosseum + Vatican are lines 70% of time. Palatine at 8am, Testaccio at 8am, Appian at 6pm give you Rome empty. Go before 9am or after 9pm. Midday is line.
Is it insanely crowded?
Yes. 2.8M people, 4.3M metro, 15M visitors a year, 80% April-Oct. Bus 64 packed 8-10am and 5-8pm. Trastevere full by 9pm Sat. Tuesday quieter than Saturday. Walk beats bus in center at 6pm.
Do I need a car in center?
No. Metro 5:30am-11:30pm, every 4-6 mins, €1.50-€2 tap. Bus + tram 24h some lines. Parking €35-50/day. Scooter €10/hr. Car only for Ostia or Tivoli — 30-40 mins without traffic, 1h30 with.
