Palace grounds, morning to midday

A day in Bangkok — 6 stops, about 2.25 km on foot, 32 minutes walking.

A compact day inside and around the royal quarter, moving through throne halls and temple courtyards with a riverside lunch break in the middle. About 1.6 km of walking in total, so most of the effort goes into looking rather than getting anywhere. Best for anyone who wants time with the architecture rather than a quick pass.

The route, in order

  1. Phiman Rattaya Throne Hall

Start with a throne hall away from the main crush, while the light is still low and the courtyards quiet.

  2. 1 min walk — Head east

    The Grand Palace

A short walk brings you to the palace complex proper — arrive before the midday heat settles over the open ground.

  3. 1 min walk — Head east

    Grand Palace

Circle the outer walls and inner courts here; the same complex rewards a second, slower loop once you know the layout.

  4. 14 min walk — Head west

    Supanniga Eating Room Tha Tien

    Opens 11:00

Just outside the palace walls near Wat Pho, this is the lunch stop — it opens at 11:00, with river and temple views.

  5. 13 min walk — Head northeast toward ถ. มหาราช

    Royal Hall of Boromphiman

Back inside the walls afterwards, the neoclassical residence is a change of register from the Thai roofs around it.

  6. 3 min walk — Head north

Wat Phra Kaew - The Temple of the Emerald Buddha

Finish at the Emerald Buddha temple, the most decorated corner of the complex and a fitting last stop before you leave.
